BCSA Revises Bulletin Regarding Certification of Recreational Vehicles

British Columbia - BCSAOn February 23, 2017, the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) issued the second revision to Information Bulletin B-G5 051206 6 (Rev. 02) entitled “Gas Safety Certification of Recreational Vehicles”.

This revised bulletin clarifies the requirements related to the resale of vehicles equipped with gas systems and appliances and the recommendations for Propane System Re-certifications.  The revised bulletin provides a link to a document “BC Safety Authority Advises:  Propane Inspections Mandatory”  published by the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia which provides additional information regarding the certification of recreational vehicles.

BCSA Revises Propane Cylinder Filling Requirements

British Columbia - BCSAOn February 23, 2017, the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) issued the first revision to Information Bulletin IB-GA 2012-01 (Rev. 01) entitled “Propane Cylinder Filling Requirements”.

This revised bulletin clarifies the appropriate and approved methods for filling propane cylinders.  The bulletin also identifies the requirement for individuals filling cylinders to be the holder of Records of Training recognized the BCSA.

BCSA Updates Requirements for Gas Operating Permits

British Columbia - BCSAOn February 23, 2017, the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) issued the fourth revision to Information Bulletin B-G5 041108 4 (Rev. 04) entitled “Gas Operating Permit Requirements and Requirements for Operating Permit Holders to Obtain an Installation Permit”.

This revised bulletin clarifies BCSA requirements with respect to gas operating permits and permit holders wanting to perform gas installations.

BSCA Updates Recommendations for Annual Servicing for Gas Appliances

British Columbia - BCSAOn February 23, 2017, the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) issued a revision to Information Bulletin B-G5 071019 3 (Rev. 01) entitled “Annual Servicing for Gas Appliances”.

This revised bulletin outlines the items that home owners should ensure are covered in annual servicing of gas appliances.  The bulletin provides service checklists covering several areas including:

  • General Gas Furnace Checklist
  • General Gas Boiler Checklist
  • General Hot Water Heater Checklist
  • Gas Fireplace Cleaning and Servicing
  • Signs that servicing is required immediately
  • Natural Gas or Propane Leaks

The bulletin also reminds home owners that the servicing and maintenance of gas appliances must be completed by a certified gas fitter employed by a BCSA licenses gas contractor.

SaskPower Issues Revision for Emergency Shutdown Systems on Propane Vaourizers

In February 2017, SaskPower issued Bulletin 01-2017 amending the B149.2-15 code to address clearance requirements for emergency shutdown systems on tank systems connected to direct-fired vapourizers.  The amendments to the requirements ensure compliance in limited installations, such as at construction sites.

TSSA Issues Propane Code Adoption Document Amendment

Ontario - TSSA Logo 01On February 1, 2017, TSSA amended their Propane Code Adoption Document.  This document adopts the 2015 versions of the B149 codes into regulation and provides additional requirements specific to compliance with theses national codes in Ontario.  This Code Adoption Document (CAD) revokes previously published versions, including the CAD published on September 15, 2016.

BCSA Issues Safety Order Related to Gas and Propane Fireplaces

British Columbia - BCSAOn January 20, 2017, the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) issued Safety Order SO-GA 2017-01 entitled “Installation or Use of Natural Gas and Propane Fireplaces Manufactured by Security Fireplaces – Models SRGH36, SBGH36, DV73 and DV71″.

This safety order requires all existing fireplaces identified in the Order be immediately disconnected from the gas supply and permanently removed from service by a licensed gas contractor.
